Polimi Photos
Here's some photos of my last visit to Polimi!

They have a fresh OJ machine, which I was pretty fascinated by!

Away, Again
Yes, I am away again, so you will have to enjoy some old but good photos! I took tons in Milan.
The Duomo is completely full of details. The roof and spires are awfully detailed considering how few people would get to peep them. Notice in this photo that the lowest layer of the railing has several different designs of support.
There are lots of sculptural carvings, from larger than life saints to life size pigeons, each posed differently.
Of course, some places the detail is expected, like on the doors. My friend told me she thinks people rub this guy's knee for luck.
It's a pretty intense building, and like most of these cathedrals, took forever to build. The expression Fabbrica del Duomo is old-school slang for a task being difficult or impossible. I am going to have to use that.

Milan Street Atmosphere
Today will have to settle for some street atmosphere in Milan.
One evening on our last trip we visited a cool holiday market.
I bought hazelnut brittle. It was great. There was basically just enough sugar to keep the nuts stuck together in a layer almost an inch deep.
And another night we went to Brera for appetizers!

Castello Sforzesco
The Castello Sforzesco is from the 14th-15th century. For the holidays, they had a lovely light show with music.

Christmas Art
As I mentioned in my last post, a lot of holiday decorations were still up when we were in Milan. This weird but cool spinning LED Christmas tree was new the palace. It actually spins quite fast. When I saw it from a distance I thought it was likely a carnival ride, but it actually spins faster than that!

Milano Mall
I'm away, so I will just be giving you some cool photos to look at!
Right next to the Duomo is the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, which I am told is the world's first mall. This is a photo from the Duomo square, looking into the mall.
The central roof of the mall is a big dome. When we were there the holiday lights were still up! The central motif is the crest of Milan.
The floor of the mall is mosaic. Near the central dome is this famous bull:
You have to spin on your heel on the bull. It's good luck if you can make a full turn!

More Duomo
There's actually a lot of photos of the Duomo from my last trip. The inside is quite lovely. When I visit a cathedral, I like to leave an offering. It seems to work the same way in all the churches of Italy. You donate a Euro or two, and light a candle as an offering.

Duomo Inside
Oh yeah, I do have a photo taken from the inside of the Duomo when the stained glass lights are on:
And here's one taken around dusk from the outside, when the lights are on. I think we had just climbed down from the roof at that point. (They let you go up there, there's an elevator and stuff. I'm not Spiderman!)

Duomo
So, Milan is a place I have been before. Actually, a couple times. The last time was in January of 2010, to visit a good friend who was working on her PhD at Polimi... We didn't stay too long but we saw the major sites, like the Duomo.
I loved it at night especially. The stained glass glows at night, they have internal lighting so that you can enjoy it when you are around the building.
