Our first adventure in Luxembourg was heading to the National Mining Museum. It was great! You take a train ride into the mine in the mountain. It's a surprisingly long ride, and you pass by a lot of cool mining equipment. Once you get into the mine, it's cold, about 50 degrees, and damp, and of course, dark. The mine opened in the mid 1800's, and closed around 1980, when it just wasn't profitable. The issue is that the ore grade in Luxembourg is low, only like 35% iron. But for years, the wealth of Luxembourg was built on that ore...
The equipment ranges from hand tools, to the modern machines. Esther loved posing with all of it. This one was for scraping rock faces.
It was actually sort of amazing how long the tour was. It sort of felt like we were down there forever. The last of the tour was with the wide variety of modern equipment, where they had this photo op in the bucket of the digger.
I would highly recommend this museum!
