A friend of mine mentioned this sight Giasma on her blog... She lives in Paris, where during the shortest time of year they only get roughly 8 hours of day. (Throw in the dawn-dusk bits, there's a little more...) so I looked it up for Milan, I will be getting a little more... the shortest days have about 9 hours of good daylight. I keep forgetting how far North Europe is... Milan is above 45 degrees latitude. Paris is practically at 49! Compare that with Boston at 42 and San Francisco at 38...
Speaking of weather, I was chatting with Andrea, one of my Italian colleagues, and I am still thinking quite brightly about the weather in Milan. I was recalling my winter experiences of Milan to him and he said they are quite typical. Especially the part about it not being so windy. Milan is apparently not a windy city, which makes freezing temperatures very tolerable. Boston area is tough since it can be windy as you are walking along in the snow. He also confirmed that snow does not stay on the ground in Milan, but he did caution me about ice. Apparently it's only a real problem on a bicycle...
