One of the places I went on my ramblings this weekend was S. Stefano Maggiore, a church not far from the Duomo. Built in 1584, sure, it's dwarfed by the Duomo, but it was still a lovely church. From the signs inside the church and the mass listings, it's a church with a Spanish language audience. The inside of the church has lots of frescoes, in various states of repair. You can see some damaged areas behind the altar in the photo below.
There were lots of icons, as one might expect. I particularly liked this one:
It's hard to tell in the photo, but the color scheme featured very vivid orange-red tones, along with metallic gold highlights. I did some sketches of some of the details, which I may share at some point when I get access to a scanner!
Another favorite for me was this statue of Mary. She's in her typical period representation, dressed in blue, halo of stars, standing on a crescent moon:
The detail that caught my eye was that here she is standing on the serpent!
